    2020 Lake Placid North American Challenge

    Olympic Speed Skating Oval, Lake Placid, NY

    December 14 & 15 2020

    Enjoy marathon skating on the famous Lake Placid Olympic Speed Skating Oval! 



    Saturday December 14: 9:00 am warmup, 9:30 am start 5k & 21k 


    Sunday December 15: 9:00am warmup, 9:30 am 42K start


    Race distances: 5K, 21K, and 42K. 


    Novice skater's 5K race: $10


    If you're new to marathon skating, the 5K, at 12.5 laps, is a good start; 

    novice skaters are encouraged to participate! 


    Either 21K or 42K only: $25


    Both 21K and 42K race: $40


    All 3 Races: $50

    Please select the distances you plan to skate in the registration entry and on the form to help us organize registrations for the timers.


    Any changes to the schedule will be posted on our website www.lakeplacidspeed.com, on the event announcement, and on the Lake Placid Speed Skating Club Facebook page. 


    Chip timing will be utilized. 


    To participate in this meet, you must be a member of US Speedskating, Skate Canada, or an equivalent ISU member skating organization. For those who are not members of a National Governing Body, one day racing licenses will be available for $20 per event. Access the form below and please bring completed copy with payment to check in.

    Check in for the marathon starts at 12 noon on Friday and will continue until 8 pm at Lake Placid Skate Shop, in the red building across from the Oval.

    Both days: 8 am start time (warmup)


    Age classes


    Pre-Junior (age 12 and under)

    Junior (age 13-18)

    Senior (age 19-29)

    Masters A (age 30-49)

    Masters B (age 50 and up)


    Distances


    500 - 1000 - 1500 - 3000*


    *Only the top four skaters in each age class (after the first three distances) will be eligible to skate the 3000 meter distance. 


    To help our Canadian friends in a difficult currency exchange situation, we are offering Canadian rates which will make the rates the same as they would be for American participants (due to the exchange rate). Please email us for the code to enter at this rate. 


    This race is sanctioned by US Speedskating. 


    Initial seeding will be based upon www.speedskatingresults.com of most recent results within two years.



    Categories may skate together at the discretion of the race director.


    The meet director can truncate the competition distances due to weather or time considerations. All efforts will be made to complete competition distances in their entirety.

    Irving Jaffee Single Distance Championships
    Saturday January 11 – Sunday January 12, 2020

    Race warmup tentatively starts 8 am both days - any changes will be addressed within 24 hours before the start of the meet and will be communicated to participants via email. 



    Saturday Races
    500m – 1500m 


    Sunday Races
    1000m - 3000m - 5000m*


    *To qualify for the 5000m, the racer needs to have a time of 5:10 or less in the 3000m. If they do not have a qualifying time yet or do not meet that standard, the highest distance they are eligible for is the 3000m. Racers who do meet the time standard must choose between the 3000m and 5000m race. Times must be official, published, and skated between July 1st 2019 and up to the first day of racing to be considered valid for 5000m qualification. 

    Time standards are not required for the following distances: 500m, 1000m, 1500m, and 3000m.

    These changes are due to time limitations and to ensure the best race experience possible for all.


    Awards for Overall Men’s and Ladies’ Champions of each distance.

     Entry for 3 or more Distances $99


    Championship Family Entry $150

    Please note we are using the US Speed Skating age classification system. The number of master skaters may warrant further classification of 10-year age categories (from age 30 onward) at the discretion of the race director.

    1st Annual Heiden Challenge

    Saturday February 29, 2020 – 

    Sunday March 1, 2020

    Olympic Speed Skating Oval
    Lake Placid, NY


    An event honoring Eric Heiden, 1980 five-time Winter Olympic Gold Medalist. Skate the same distances he skated on the historic Lake Placid Olympic Speed Skating oval!


    Due to the larger distances and the limited time available, we will not offer races for skaters under age 13. 


    Entry Fee - $80


    TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:


    Saturday: 8 am - 12 pm 

      AND     3 pm - 6 pm 


    Sunday: 8 am - 12 pm 


    Overall male and female winners will be awarded for first, second and third place.


    Distances


    Women 500 - 1,000 - 1,500 - 3,000 - 5,000*

    *Only the top four skaters in the 3,000 will qualify for the 5,000. 


    Men 500 - 1,000 - 1,500 - 5,000 - 10,000*

    *Only the top four skaters in the 5000 will qualify for the 10,000.

    Times were adapted from the D2 times in the AmCup series in which the times were calculated to be 15% slower than those times to allow more racers to qualify. Skaters need only meet ONE distance time standard to qualify for the meet.


    The 5,000 and 10,000 will function as a "final" for the top four women in the 3,000 and the top four men in the 5,000. Those who meet at least one of the time standards above for entry will have the opportunity to skate the following distances: 500-1000-1500-3000 (women); 500-1000-1500-5000 (men). 


    This race is sanctioned by US Speedskating.
